Meet a woman who has been in Acting 75 years.
Marcia Mae Jones family came to Hollywood in 1920 when new construction was booming. When they first arrived to Hollywood they moved into a duplex on Kingsley Drive just below Melrose.
Her father was a Western Union telegraph operator. He later became employed by the L.A. Times. Her father William Macon's big day came in the great earthquake of '33. When everyone else was bailing out of the Times building, he kept his cool and was the first person to get out the news that L.A. was rocking.
Her mother Margaret Maloy brought Marcia to Paramount in a baby stroller where her older sister Margaret was working. Coincidentally Paramount Director James Cruz was looking for a baby to play Delores Costello as a baby in Mannequin '25
Marcia never went to acting schools. She learned by experience at Paramount. Marcia recalls that in those days anyone could get into Hollywood. At 6 years old in the pits of the depression Marcia's mother signed a weekly contract for $125.
Her next movies would include Clark Gable in his first roll as well as Barbara Stanwick. In another movie Night Nurse '31 Marcia remembers her mother walk up to Stanwick and thanking her.
Marcia's favorite movie is These Three because it was written by Lillian Helman which was a New York Stage Play. One of the women in the story had to be chopped out because she was a lesbian. This satisfied the Hayes Office. This movie helped propel Marcia to bigger rolls. Tom Sawyer was another fun movie which took 6 months. During these months Marcia had to switch parts during filming because her height grew during this time. Originally she was to play Becky Thatcher. Everyone became like family during this time and it was hard to part when the filming was finished. The average time to make a movie was 2-3 months.
Marcia has had a lifetime of doing commercials which include train lines. Hormel, Weber's bread, Purina. She even had a clothing line named after her. She also accounted for a lot of parents of baby girls having choose the middle name Mae in '31.
Marica Married in '57. Her late husband wrote for shows such as My Three Sons, All in the family, Gilligan's Island and Mash. She has four children. Marcia Mae was also one of the first members of the screen actor's guild.
Today Marcia lives happily in Los Angeles. She is a "doer" in good health and just turned 76. She has two cats named kitty 1 and 2.
Marcia does not sign autographs anymore. She gets flooded with generic letters for autographs daily from dealers posing as fans. She does not have the time now to figure out which fan letters are real.
If you have any real interest in Marcia Mae you can email this site and I will give it to her. Marcia let me go over her scrapbook and allow me to feature her because we knew her in 1935.
